How might we unleash the unmet potential of glass by devising and producing a set of sustainable, human centered, and financially viable solutions for recycled, colored, mixed glass in cities?

CLIENT

HEINEKEN USA and APCO Worldwide. We as a team of 18 students 2 professors from SCAD collaborated with our client in FALL 2017 for the duration of 10 weeks.

OBJECTIVE

We envisioned a system in which solutions can exist on a micro, macro and meta scale beginning on a personal level and converging together in community spaces. In order to address these issues in a manner that fits into this system, we developed our solutions in two directions that focus on two primary elements - air and water.

PROCESS

Heineken_research process-01.jpg

STEP 1

We started with secondary research in-order to understand the process of recycling glass materials and innovative uses of glass.

STEP 2

We also researched about the resilient cities through the 100 resilient cities provided by the Rockefeller foundation. It helped us understand the needs and challenges faced by the urban cities.

STEP 3 : ATLANTA FIELD TRIP RESEARCH

STEP 4

For primary research we did surveys, interviews and invited a panel of urban designers; Denise Grabowski, Nick Helmholdt, Ryan Madson, and Nick Palumbo to discuss our solutions with us. Some notable survey results were 95.4% of surveyed people value the importance of time outdoors as well as 78.9% value green spaces.

SOLUTION

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

When the filter is sent back by the user at the end of its life, the fiberglass material can be utilized by American Fiber Green Products.

SYSTEM

When the filter is sent back at the end of its life with the user, the fiberglass material can be utilized by American Fiber Green Products. This company is one of the only in the US to use recycled fiberglass to create building material. We envision this material going to the construction of Ponder or Levee. At the end of the life of that building material, the transit authority, advertising company, or local municipality that has maintained it can send it directly to an MRF, which will then sort, crush, and prepare for manufacturers to create new glass products.

02. PONDER

A bench, Ponder, is a place for passive activities - waiting, resting, contemplating. With glass as the champion as well as recycled and reclaimed material in mind, the furniture will find its home throughout a community.

HOW

Urban furniture sourced from recycled glass for those on the run, who could use a moment of refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

03. LEVEE

As a building element, the wall is often praised for its ability to withstand and protect us from the elements. The wall in its purest form, has often been viewed as an element of separation.

SERVICE PACKAGE

The Service Offering: The service package model is a tool for mapping out the bundle of service offerings. Existing and new services are able to be visually compared and analyzed.

The Augmented Offering : In the augmented offering model, the service process and the interactions between the service provider and service user are included; therefore, the model is geared to the holistic customer perceived quality of services. There are three elements for analyzing the perceived quality of series from a managerial point of view; they are accessibility of the service, interaction with the service, organization, and customer participation.
